Did you know that the ancient Egyptians were buried with jewels and other treasures and Viking warriors were buried with their weapons?
An increasing number of bereaved - hinterblieben, trauernd - relatives in Ireland are laying their loved ones to rest with a mobile phone.
To lay someone to rest - zur letzten Ruhe betten.
The mobile phone is only the top of the list! Some other members of the family put the latest electronic gadget into the coffin.
Some decades ago it was common to see people buried with their favourite tipple - Lieblingsgetränk - or simply a bottle of whiskey. Some were buried with photographs, wedding rings and other personal items.
The new trend with the cell phones is the latest fad - Fimmel.
The craze is especially popular among the young people. Some young girls live their lives by their mobiles and feel it`s a part of them.
There are certainly a lot of people who are terrified that they may wake up in the coffin, so they take along a mobile to ring for help to get them out.
Although, certain rules would apply, including making sure the mobile is switched off or silent before it accompanies the deceased - die Verstorbenen.
In a sense, this entirely new trend away from religious ceremonials at funerals in favour of some more personal and laid-back approach is making the practise of being buried with unusual items more acceptable.
In other words, people are no more afraid to express their loved one`s wishes.
One of my girlfriends said to me:
“I `ll throw confetti on your coffin to show how gaily coloured your life was”.
