NIGHTMARE ON THE TUBE

Dear Mark,
I had a real nightmare many years ago. I was on the way to the city with my little son sitting in his buggy. It was the Bonner “U-Bahn”, not as big as the Metro or the tube.
I thought about terrible things to happen. For example fire. And how I would manage it to get out with my child. Being absorbed in this thoughts the train stopped. In the tunnel. Later we heard an announcement that there was a fire in the tunnel some stations ahead of us.
I can tell you, this was one of those moments in my life, where I was near to panic.
But I thought I had to react rational and quiet to show my child that there is no danger for him.
And nothing happened to us, we needn’t to leave the train. An hour later we could continue our tour.

I like to take public transport, but I always look where I can get out in case of danger.
And in summer the undergrounds I know are pretty cool. :-)

Take the Tube - only idiots drive?
The London Tube is today one of Londoners` pet hates.
Especially in the summertime. 47. 2 degrees (117 Fahrenheit).
It has been announced that new “air-cooled” trains are set to come into the service by 2009.
A mock-up of the new carriages was unveiled - enthüllen - some time ago and the Londoners moaned and groaned - jammern und stöhnen.
The trains come without full air conditioning. In other words, they will be as hot as ever.

Funny, but the underground-engineers advised their counterparts in Delhi and in Cairo on trains and platforms and even air conditioning. I very often spend my autumns in Cairo and I have seen it all.
But the engineers can`t deliver for their own city. So in the future we will see some fans only.
You should drink bottled water and simply grin and bear it - gute Miene zum bösen Spiel machen.

In recent weeks the London Tube experience, always prone to strikes, suicides and terror alerts, has become almost as bad as driving, except you get to do your knitting - if you can battle your way to a seat.
Some weeks ago a Central line train derailed on a quiet Saturday just before a mid-London station, injuring 32 people and instantly closing the line.

More and more chaos. On a bad day, it can now take about the same time to fly from London to Berlin, including airport check-in, as it does to take the Tube from west to far north London.

What do you think about it?
Do you like the Tube?
What is your experience concerning the underground or subway all over the world?
