Country-specific tips
Landesspezifische Hinweise

  • Canadians will not thank you for telling them how similar their speech is to Americans, or to referring to Canada as 'the 51st State': they can be very patriotic!
  • People are generally more reserved and formal than in the US - the culture is more European.
  • Time is just as important in Canada as it is in the USA: being early or late is definitely not going to help any relationship.

  • Business hours are generally longer than in other countries, although it is common to take a long lunch break in the afternoon and to celebrate the many holidays in the religious calendar.
  • Relationships are important, so in a meeting time may be spent in what seems like inconsequential chatter with business relegated to the final few minutes, but it is the chatter that will cement the deal.
  • Formality is important: it is not common to use first names unless and until invited to do so and business attire is more formal.
