English speakers are supposedly more diplomatic and indirect than some of their European counterparts, so the story goes. Whoever still believes this has not recently flown with a budget airline company and experienced the infamous rudeness of the staff, sat in the London underground, or for that matter, watched the House of Commons in action on the BBC news. Good service, and the politeness that should accompany it, is not what it used to be.
